BackLaunch of Our S3-Compatible Object Storage
After an extended beta phase, our S3-compatible Object Storage – one of the most popular feature requests from our users – is now officially available. After our last post about use cases and tools, we would like to give you a few insights into how we at cloudscale.ch get the most out of this technology:
High reliability thanks to consistent redundancy
At cloudscale.ch, high-availability already plays a central role in the design phase of new features and this is no different with our Object Storage. Thus, requests to the Object Storage are distributed to two load balancers using "DNS round robin". These, in turn, can take over each other's IP and with it the entire load in case of a failure or maintenance work. It goes without saying that this does not only apply to IPv4: An ever increasing number of systems worldwide use IPv6 and can thereby access our Object Storage natively.
Behind the two load balancers, redundantly designed RADOS gateways store the data on a Ceph storage cluster. Similar to our SSD-only and bulk storage, we use a replication factor of 3 to ensure maximum protection of your data on our Object Storage.
Maximum speed for typical applications
In addition to high-availability, we also optimized the performance of our Object Storage. This includes the so-called cache tier: frequently used objects are automatically held in a special cache and can thus be accessed at lightning speed. This benefits your customers if you deliver the static files on your website or images in a newsletter directly from our Object Storage.
We also choose our hardware carefully: For our Object Storage, we have chosen a combination of hard drives for optimal storage density and NVMe SSDs for maximum speed. In conjunction with a sophisticated setup of Ceph, we also achieved an additional increase in speed even for rarely used objects.
Free introductory phase
On the occasion of the official launch of our Object Storage, we would like to give all users the opportunity to test this new feature free of charge until the end of August 2017. Evaluate different tools and discover new use cases to find out how you can optimize your application with our Object Storage.
From September 2017 onwards, a moderate pricing for the Object Storage will be introduced, which will take the actual space usage, data traffic and the number of requests into account. We will, of course, inform you in good time about the exact billing mode.
Most certainly, you are already using applications that can benefit from an Object Storage. Take advantage of the free introductory phase and test the opportunities that are opening up to you!
For objects by the bucket,
your cloudscale.ch team
