BackThe Engineering Blog – by and for Engineers
If you are interested in technical details and if you sometimes wish you could watch our professionals at work, then our new engineering blog is just the thing for you. This is where members of our cloudscale team share unfiltered insider knowledge from a personal perspective. Find out more about their tricky challenges, their tips and favourite tools as well as general insights into their work in the "engine room" of our cloud.
Information to meet every need
Communication and transparency are important to us here at cloudscale. This is why, every few weeks, you will find up-to-date information, e.g. the presentation of new features or tips on how to use our service optimally, in the "News" area of our website (and in your inbox, if desired). In addition, we publish upcoming maintenance work and information about any incidents on our https://www.cloudscale-status.net status page. This is also where you can subscribe directly to status notifications on the channel of your choice.
We are now launching the engineering blog as a complement to these announcements from a "company perspective". This is where you can find out first-hand what is on our employees' minds and what matters to them. Written by techies for techies, these posts contain interesting details from our stack, personal evaluations relating to their work, and undoubtedly also valuable inputs for your own projects. The posts are generally available either in German or in English, depending on the language they were written in by our engineers.
Extensive range of reading material
It goes without saying that our engineering blog will not start with an empty list. You will be able to find three very different articles there from the outset.
Actual data storage in our Ceph storage clusters occurs using a large number of OSDs that occasionally, e.g. in the case of maintenance work, need to be restarted. Find out from Denis, whose blog post includes latency graphs and the Python script used, how we have minimized the performance impact of these restarts with a staggered approach (in English).
Lukas has provided you with a very different type of insight. He is the newest member of the cloudscale team and has been with us for a few weeks. In an unusual analogy to a recently completed "fridge project", he describes how he experienced onboarding with us as well as the challenges he has faced and successes he has enjoyed so far (in English).
Our cloud is based on established open-source projects such as OpenStack and Ceph. However, we also write and maintain our own software on a scale where it is important to maintain oversight. Effectively sifting through code and finding specific code locations with precision is an important ability. In his post, Michi explains how he uses pyastgrep when regular expressions are no longer effective (in German).
If you have any questions or input on any of the posts, e-mail engineering-blog@cloudscale.ch, where the engineers behind the posts are looking forward to your feedback.
Find out how varied the people and tasks behind our cloud services are. Discover how our engineers experience their work, what inspires them, and how they find solutions. Even if you do not operate your own cloud, you will find exciting new perspectives in our engineering blog – by techies for techies!
